Deputy Corporation Counsel Karen Tidwell provided an informational update on pending litigation and settlement payments handled by the Office of Corporation Counsel. Tidwell said many cases are in discovery and in motion for summary judgment briefing and that the office continues to evaluate and resolve cases as appropriate.
Tidwell described a construction dispute in which a vendor sued the county; the Office of Corporation Counsel filed a compulsory counterclaim under Wisconsin civil procedure and the matter was resolved in the county’s favor. “Ultimately, we resolve that case favorably for the County. The claim that was originally bought by the vendor was waived... and then the county was paid $60,000,” Tidwell said.
Supervisors asked about specific items on the claims report, including a garnishment-related matter (listed as claim number 76) and a pending case involving the Milwaukee Deputy Sheriff’s Union. Tidwell said she would follow up with additional detail on specific matters handled by assigned attorneys and offered to provide the committee a sortable version of the claims and litigation report that supervisors said would aid oversight.
No committee action was taken; the item was informational and will continue to be monitored by the committee.
