The Safety & Health Committee approved a five-year lease for warehouse and office space to be used by the Miami-Dade County Sheriff's Office (item 3a). The lease has an estimated fiscal impact to the county of $1,802,874.98 for the initial term plus a five-year renewal option. The motion passed by voice vote.
Commissioner Bastian asked whether the county had considered purchasing the site instead of leasing. A committee participant familiar with sheriff’s office practice said state statute prevents the sheriff from owning property as an elected official; the county, however, can own property and allow the sheriff to use it. County attorneys confirmed that distinction on the record.
The lease resolution authorizes the county mayor to execute the agreement, exercise contractual rights in the lease and take actions necessary to effectuate the lease. The committee moved the item forward without amendment.
