The Hermiston School District 8 Board of Education took several routine and administrative votes May 12. Highlights:
- School calendar update approved: The board voted unanimously to update the 2025–26 school calendar to shift spring break to the week of April 6–10, 2026. District staff said the change aligns Hermiston with neighboring districts (Richland, Pasco and others) and does not change the number of student contact days or the first/last day of school.
- Construction contract awarded: The board unanimously approved a recommendation to award a contract for the Desert View Elementary secure vestibule and administrative remodel to CB Construction, Inc. of La Grande in the amount of $495,194. The board amended an initial motion to limit the award to Desert View specifically and approved the contract as presented; funding was described as coming from bond proceeds.
- Consent agenda and minutes: The board approved consent items (9.1.1–9.3.2) and approved minutes from previous meetings (April 14; April 20; April 29) by unanimous votes.
Other process notes: The board amended the published agenda at the start of the meeting to move the graduation policy item (IKFB) out of the consent agenda and onto the action agenda so it could receive separate discussion. Several items passed with unanimous voice votes; the board did not record individual roll‑call tallies in the transcript for these motions.
