Doctor Batten (presentation) said the changes were proposed to increase banked instructional time, reduce the number of in-year workdays for teachers and provide clarity to families and staff about weather makeup procedures. The revised calendar also differentiates district-required workdays (for district professional development) from school-based workdays (for school-level planning and classroom preparation).
Batten noted the district has planned weather makeup dates in advance and explained that if the state removes remote-day options during a declared emergency, the district would follow the pre-noted sequence — exhausting makeup dates first, protecting the established spring break, and only then considering other options such as Saturdays if necessary.
The board voted to approve the revised academic calendar, and the decision will be implemented for the 2025–26 school year with the stated makeup-day sequence and the 215 total employment days requirement for staff noted in the calendar documentation.
