Amir Omar sworn in as Richardson mayor; newly elected councilmembers take oaths and outline priorities

Amir Omar was sworn in as mayor of Richardson and the newly elected councilmembers took their oaths of office during the council meeting; the ceremony was followed by brief introductory remarks from Mayor Omar and responses from outgoing Mayor Bob Dubey and multiple councilmembers.

City Secretary Niemeyer administered the oath of office to each incoming councilmember and to Omar, who repeated the pledge to “faithfully execute the duties of mayor” and to “preserve, protect and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States and of this state.” Several councilmembers were likewise sworn in during the ceremony.

In his introductory remarks, Mayor Omar thanked his predecessors and supporters, acknowledged former mayors and former councilmembers in the audience, and said he planned to rely on their experience. He said he would prioritize regular public engagement and transparency, promising “regular coffee chats, quarterly town halls, open conversations,” and said, “I am honored to be your next mayor, and I'm ready to serve with this city council, our city staff, and with all of you.”

Councilmembers delivered remarks recognizing outgoing Mayor Bob Dubey’s decades of service. Outgoing Mayor Dubey, in turn, responded with a reflection on accomplishments during his tenure, noting planning and capital projects completed under his leadership (including the Envision Richardson comprehensive plan update, master plans, new facilities and infrastructure work) and expressing gratitude to staff and the community.

The council announced that selection of the mayor pro tem will occur at the May 19 city council meeting in accordance with City Charter section 3.02. After the oaths and remarks, the council recessed for photographs and a reception and adjourned the meeting.
