County staff propose lighting on south side of original courthouse; commissioners ask for period-appropriate design and funding options

Booker Boyer, director of building and grounds, asked the Lincoln County Board of Commissioners on May 12 to permit installation of lighting along the sidewalk on the south side of the original courthouse to improve safety and security for early-morning and evening pedestrians.
Boyer said the south-side sidewalk currently has no lighting and that the fixtures should be compatible with the courthouse's classical revival architecture. Commissioners agreed the area was dark and noted public safety and security reasons to add lights; several commissioners recommended commercial-grade fixtures with a taller profile than the small sample Boyer showed.
Commissioners suggested Booker coordinate with Commissioner Hubley (noted for relevant professional expertise) to identify historically appropriate fixtures and to research potential funding sources. One commissioner suggested applying for a state historic preservation grant; Booker also was encouraged to check Mid-Nebraska Community Foundation grant cycles and coordinate with building-and-grounds and roads staff on long-term maintenance and snow removal responsibilities. Booker said he will return with additional examples, cost estimates and recommendations.
