“There's not a settlement,” Daniels said. “They have proposed a settlement — the Board of Supervisors within their right — but there's not even been a hearing.” He said the judge in Apache County had not ruled or held a hearing on the proposed agreement.
Daniels said the county still needs a jail and that public discussion has been “muddied” by premature reports. He urged clarity and patience while the legal process runs its course, and he emphasized that the sheriff’s office remains focused on securing jail capacity to address county needs.
The sheriff did not provide details of the proposed settlement language, any timelines for a court hearing, or the position of the Board of Supervisors beyond noting that a proposal exists. He said it remains uncertain whether a judge will accept the proposed terms.
