The California State Senate unanimously adopted Senate Concurrent Resolution 68, designating the week as Tardive Dyskinesia (TD) Awareness Week and calling attention to screening and treatment needs for people affected by the condition.
Senator Blake Spear, identified on the floor as the author of SCR 68, described tardive dyskinesia as a motor condition that can arise as a side effect of antipsychotic medications and said awareness and education are important to ensure people with TD receive appropriate care. “Education and awareness are key so that those who are suffering from a malady receive the support and understanding they deserve,” he said.
In floor remarks, Blake Spear highlighted groups at higher risk and cited an estimate that many adults with TD remain undiagnosed. He noted recommendations by the American Psychiatric Association for routine screening of patients taking antipsychotic medications and that treatments exist to manage symptoms.
The resolution received no floor opposition and was adopted by roll call (36 ayes, 0 noes). After adoption, Blake Spear introduced advocates and representatives from Mental Health America of California and the life‑sciences company Neurocrine in the gallery.
SCR 68 is a formal recognition to raise awareness; the Senate did not announce accompanying appropriations or regulatory changes during the session.
