Waxahachie ISD trustees approve change to 2024–25 academic calendar

The Waxahachie Independent School District Board of Trustees voted 6-0 to approve a modification to the 2024–25 academic calendar that makes May 22 the last day of school for students, with an early release, and designates May 23 as a no-school day to accommodate end-of-year grading, graduation logistics and district construction moves.

District administrator Mrs. Mott told trustees the district currently has 1,080 surplus instructional minutes and an additional 1,200 minutes granted under a professional-development waiver, totaling 2,280 surplus minutes — roughly five days. The district used two bad-weather days on Jan. 9 and 10, leaving three surplus days available; the proposed calendar change uses that remaining time so students can finish the year earlier and staff can complete grades and prepare for graduation.

Mott said the change will ease planning for graduation events, noting a graduation scheduled for the evening of May 23 and Waxahachie High School’s graduation on May 24. She also said district moves and construction at Findlay are scheduled for late May and early June and that moving students out earlier will help those construction timelines.

Trustee Mrs. Timmerman made the motion to approve the calendar modification; Trustee Mr. Cooper seconded. The roll call was recorded as six votes in favor, zero opposed; the motion carried 6–0. The board then adjourned with a unanimous voice vote.

The board’s action applies the district’s available surplus minutes and the professional-development waiver to change the end-of-year schedule; no additional funding or external approvals were cited during the discussion.
