The board’s safety committee reported on after-hours use of school playgrounds at the May 7 meeting, describing neighborhood complaints about groups congregating and playing loudly late at night.
Committee members said the district has monitored activity at the Siwanoy playground and that Police Chief Sanchez attends safety meetings and is aware of the situation. The committee recommended residents contact the police to report disruptive late-night activity; the chief indicated officers will drive by after midnight to check sites in response to complaints.
Committee members discussed options and agreed that routinely locking school outdoor spaces for extended periods—such as weekends—would not be appropriate given regular community daytime use. They said the district and police will continue coordinating responses and encouraged neighbors to report disturbances to the police so they can respond.
The committee noted site inspections have not found vandalism such as broken glass; the issue reported to the board was primarily young people congregating and noise on weekend nights. The safety committee will continue to monitor and liaise with the town police department on enforcement and neighborhood concerns.
