Council approves five-year Axon contract for body cameras and tasers

The Middleton City Council voted to authorize the mayor to enter a five-year contract with Axon Enterprises for body-worn cameras and tasers for the Middleton Police Department, at a total not to exceed $98,334.48.
Sergeant Kelkey told the council the department’s existing body camera and taser contracts are expiring; the new agreement consolidates three separate contracts into one five-year package. Kelkey said the contract includes training, maintenance and warranties and that equipment shipment is expected in June or July with activation by October. “It’s all upgraded stuff,” Kelkey said, adding the training requirement may be met through virtual‑reality headsets provided with the system or through practical exercises.
Council members asked whether the contract covers maintenance, repairs and software upgrades; Kelkey said those elements are included under the five-year warranty and support provisions in the contract.
The motion to authorize the mayor to sign the contract passed by voice vote.
Ending: Department staff will finalize delivery and training scheduling under the Axon contract and proceed with equipment deployment and required annual training.
