3 Islands Safe Neighborhood board appoints two members; background checks to apply to new applicants

The 3 Islands Safe Neighborhood District Board of Directors appointed Maya Marita and Michael Rose to the board at a special meeting on May 7, approving the appointments by a 5-0 roll call.

The appointments took place during a brief special meeting called to order by Chair Cooper at 6:50 p.m. There were no members of the public in attendance. The board voted unanimously to add the two applicants; board members noted the city recently approved an ordinance that requires background checks for new appointees.

Chair Cooper called the special meeting and confirmed a quorum. Present on the call were Chair Cooper; Vice Chair Lazaro; Director Adams; Director Butler; and Director Lee Matau. City Manager Dr. Earl and City Attorney Marina were also present for the meeting.

Vice Chair Lazaro said, "I wanted to appoint Maya Marita. I think I'm saying it right," and proposed adding Marita and Michael Rose to the 3 Islands board. After members indicated a motion and a second were made (mover and seconder not specified in the record), the board conducted a roll-call vote. The roll call recorded the following votes: Director Lima Tov — yes; Director Butler — yes; Vice Chair Lazaro — yes; Chair Cooper — yes; Director Adams — yes. The motion carried, 5-0.

Director Adams stated for the record that "these 2 applications will be subject to background check based on the ordinance we just recently approved." Board members clarified that the background-check requirement is not retroactive and will apply only to future applicants and appointments.

With the appointments confirmed and no public comment, Chair Cooper adjourned the meeting.
