Sheriff reports small rise in jail population, plans hires and pod reopening

The Greene County Sheriff’s Office presented its monthly operational report and described staffing and housing plans for the county jail.
The sheriff reported 60 civil attempts, 12 civil papers served, 251 traffic tickets issued and 69 arrests in the month, and said the jail population opened April at 38 and closed the month at 40 with a monthly high of 42. Corrections staff recorded 20 transports totaling 995 miles and about 48 hours, moving 26 inmates. The sheriff said there are seven state‑ready inmates in custody and that New York State Justice Department intake has begun but will accept a limited number statewide.
The sheriff said the county is in the process of hiring four additional corrections officers who have already been approved and has four more candidates in process. He said the office plans to open a remaining housing pod, bring female inmates back into county custody and resume inmate transports in the coming months once staffing allows.
Meeting members approved travel for Deputy Chuck Ryan to Philadelphia for the field certification of drug recognition expert training; the sheriff’s office said the governor’s traffic safety committee will pay Ryan’s lodging and meals so there will be no cost to the county. The vote on that travel authorization was recorded as carried.
Sheriff’s office staff also described assistance at local DMV locations to help residents obtain REAL IDs ahead of the state deadline and listed participation in a May 21 Tunnel to Towers home dedication in Round Top where sheriff’s personnel will provide a color guard and traffic control.
