Council authorizes land acquisition and engineering for Quivira Road improvements between 140th and 150th

The Olathe City Council on May 6 approved actions to advance the Quivira Road improvements project (PN 3-C-011-24), including a resolution authorizing a survey and legal description of land or interests to be acquired and an ordinance approving an engineer’s survey to authorize acquisition.
City Engineer Nate Baldwin told the council that the approved project will convert the last unimproved section between the county line and 170th Street into a two-lane divided arterial with turn lanes, a roundabout at 140th Street, a 10-foot side path on one side and a 5-foot sidewalk on the other, dedicated bike lanes, improved street lighting, medians and landscaping. Baldwin said the project addresses long-standing requests for sidewalks, lighting and improved sight distance and noted it will include ADA-compliant crossings.
Councilmember discussion included questions about the bicycle network continuity north of the project; Baldwin said he would confirm details and provide follow-up. The council approved Resolution No. 25-1036 authorizing the survey/description and Ordinance No. 25-13 authorizing the acquisition on separate roll-call votes recorded as 6-0.
Staff said the project will improve pedestrian and bicycle accommodations and add street lighting and other complete-street features. Next steps include right-of-way acquisition, final design and utility coordination before construction.
