TxDOT says FM 2/Highway 6 overpass near completion; 105 widening funded but years away

Chad Boney, district engineer for the Texas Department of Transportation(TxDOT) Bryan District, told the Grimes County Commissioners Court that the FM 2/Highway 6 overpass is expected to be paved and largely finished this month, with traffic switching and final work to follow.
The update on Wednesday covered active projects and longer-term planning across Grimes County. Boney said paving for the FM 2/Highway 6 overpass is in its final stages and TxDOT hopes to switch traffic mid-month and substantially complete the work by the end of May.
Boney said turn-lane work on State Highway 105 between Navasota and Plantersville (the intersection area at SH 249/409) is under construction in phases; the remaining left-turn bays and related intersection improvements are expected to be completed over roughly a year, weather permitting. A separate resurfacing and driveway-pipe repair project on FM 149 toward Richards has started and likely will be finished by the end of the calendar year.
The replacement of the Gibbons Creek bridge on State Highway 30 is underway in design and right-of-way phases and is expected to be a multi-year effort, Boney said, estimating roughly two years of work once construction begins.
Boney also reiterated that a planned widening and added capacity for sections of FM 105 (from Highway 6 in Navasota toward the 249 terminus) is a funded priority but not imminent: he said TxDOT has advanced the project in its programming but, because of engineering, right-of-way and public engagement steps, a realistic earliest construction start is about five years away. By contrast, additional lanes on FM 249 remain unfunded for the county and are therefore farther off his list of deliverables.
Court members raised safety concerns. Boney noted that, across his 10-county district, traffic fatalities have been rising and that lane departures are the single largest crash factor; he urged drivers to observe reduced speeds in construction zones and said TxDOT evaluates each fatality to identify fixable roadway factors such as sight distance, signage or shoulder conditions.
Commissioners pressed on timing and local impacts: Boney said bridge and resurfacing projects require right-of-way acquisitions and utility relocation, and that public meetings would continue as designs refined alternative layouts near populated roadways. He encouraged local officials to communicate priorities and to participate in the public-engagement steps that precede construction.
The court did not take formal action on TxDOT items during the discussion.
