Michael Sims told the May 6 Coeur d'Alene City Council he and other residents have submitted a petition asking the city to lower the speed limit on Atlas Avenue between Prairie Avenue and Hanley from 35 mph to 25 mph, citing persistent noise and safety concerns.
Sims said he collected about 45 signatures representing 45 homes, and estimated roughly 100 homes along that stretch are affected. He told the council that many back doors face Atlas and that the distance from the road to the property line is only about 13 yards. “The noise is just absolutely horrendous,” he said, and argued that lower vehicle speeds reduce tire and engine noise. Sims said he has invited streets and engineering staff and council members to visit his home in the afternoon to hear the noise firsthand.
He also raised concerns about increased diesel truck traffic and use of engine braking, and urged the council to act quickly rather than waiting months for a study. Sims said he had discussed jurisdictional authority with state officials and was told the city and its streets and engineering department have authority to set local speed limits on city streets.
Ending: Council did not take immediate action on the petition during the meeting; staff from streets and engineering were aware of the traffic on Atlas Avenue and Sims said he would continue outreach to city staff and council members.
