Council approves application for $2.2 million state transportation grant for Denver Steeles reconstruction

Los Alamos County Council voted unanimously on May 6 to authorize staff to apply for New Mexico Department of Transportation funding for the Denver Steels Phase 2 reconstruction project.
The resolution (No. 25-08) asks the county engineer to pursue $2,200,000 through the NMDOT Transportation Project Fund (TPF). Staff said DOT advised reducing the request because of limited statewide funds and indicated the $2.2 million request would be the most realistic award. The project requires a 5% county match. County staff said the reconstruction is already programmed in the county Capital Improvement Plan, and any grant award would free CIP funds for other projects.
County Engineer Eric (last name on file) told council he felt the county had a strong chance of receiving the reduced award. The resolution passed 7-0 with no abstentions or recusals.
Staff will proceed with the application and report back on award outcomes; if funded, the county match will be drawn from the previously programmed CIP allocation for the project.
