The Franklin County Board of Commissioners approved a proclamation declaring May 4'10, 2025 as National Correctional Officers and Employees Week in Franklin County.
Warden Gordon, speaking for jail staff, told commissioners the week is an opportunity to recognize the work of correctional staff and described staffing shortages and other operational challenges. "Correctional officers and employees work in a very demanding and stressful conditions facing many challenges and put their lives at risk every day," the warden said.
The warden cited national trends identified by the National Institute of Corrections, including exposure to potent opiates, growing mental-health and substance-abuse needs among inmates, gang-related security threats and staffing shortages that lead to mandatory overtime. He said Franklin County is delivering reentry services, medication-assisted treatment and evidence-based programs to address recidivism.
Commissioners thanked jail staff for their work and approved the proclamation by voice vote. The proclamation text cited the national observance established in 1984 and described correctional staff as a critical part of public safety in the county.
