Lake County Board proclaims May 2025 as Correctional Officers Week

The Lake County Board of Supervisors on May 2025 adopted a proclamation designating the week of May 2025 as Correctional Officers Week in Lake County, recognizing the county’s correctional staff for their service in the county jail system.

Vice Chair Rasmussen read the proclamation aloud and thanked custody staff for their work, saying, “correctional staff in Lake County, they're a very critical and important part of our criminal justice system.” The proclamation praises correctional personnel for ensuring safety and protecting constitutional rights while encouraging rehabilitation.

Under Sheriff Corey Polich, filling in for Sheriff Bingham, thanked the board for the proclamation and described the facility’s daily operations. “The jail is much like a city, with all the problems a city might have,” Polich said, and noted the jail houses “over 200 people who are in our custody,” adding that deputies provide lifesaving care when necessary.

Board members and county officials noted challenges that have changed local jail operations over the last two decades, including criminal justice realignment, higher proportions of pretrial detainees and increased behavioral health needs. Supervisor Sabatier and other supervisors discussed how many people now stay longer in custody and the need for county departments to coordinate services for people in custody.

The proclamation, which the board passed and adopted in May 2025, was signed by Chair EJ Crandall. Vice Chair Rasmussen encouraged residents to join in recognizing custody staff for their contributions to public safety and the care of people in custody.

The adoption was ceremonial and focused on recognition; the transcript does not record a formal vote tally or any motion maker and seconder for the proclamation.
