Board proclaims May Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month after employees’ presentation

The Marin County Board of Supervisors unanimously adopted a resolution May 6 proclaiming May 2025 as Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month in Marin County.

County employee affinity group MAPLE (Marin Asian American Public Local Employees) leaders made remarks at the dais and introduced the resolution. MAPLE co‑president Ashley Green and treasurer Sabrina Cardoza described the group’s 12‑year history of employee mentorship, cultural events and collaboration with community organizations such as the Asian American Alliance of Marin and the Multicultural Center of Marin. Speakers urged the county to continue hiring and promoting employees of color and to support affinity groups and the county Office of Equity.

Public commenters including representatives of the Asian American Alliance of Marin and the Asian American Pacific Islanders of the North Bay spoke in support. The resolution text — read aloud by the Board — recognized the history and contributions of AANHPI residents, noted historical events such as the Chinese Exclusion Act and Angel Island, and pledged support for equity and inclusion initiatives in the county.

Supervisor Luce moved the resolution; it was seconded and approved on a voice vote. The board opened the item to public comment before the vote and heard a range of community remarks, including calls to remember historical injustices and to broaden recognition of Indigenous peoples and other groups.

Ending: The resolution is ceremonial but the board and staff said county offices will continue to support MAPLE and related community events; organizers said a calendar of events and public programs will be available by contacting MAPLE.
