Brentwood Park advocates ask council for timeline and extra resources to finish playground project

Costa Mesa — Advocates for Brentwood Park asked the City Council on May 6 for clarity and acceleration of an already-funded playground replacement project, saying the existing equipment is more than 25 years old.

A resident speaking for the Brentwood Park advocates described the park’s history and the eucalyptus trees that define the site and said advocates have worked for five years to secure funding and community support. The speaker asked the council what steps the city could take now to move from planning to construction (“shovels in the ground”) and whether additional city resources could accelerate installation and allow a 2025 rededication.

Why it matters: Brentwood Park is a neighborhood park used by local families; the advocates said funds are allocated and that community volunteers and city staff have supported the project. Councilmembers said the park is on the CIP priority list and that they expect to support the project when earlier-priority projects are completed.

Council response: Council members acknowledged the advocates’ work. Council member Jeff Pettis and Mayor Pro Tem Manuel Chavez individually noted their support; Chavez said he had previously supported placing Brentwood Park on the CIP priority list and expects to fund it once higher-priority projects are completed.

Next steps: Staff and council members indicated continued support and asked advocates to coordinate with parks staff. No new funding commitment or immediate construction timetable was announced at the May 6 meeting.
