City proclaims May as Building Safety Month; Building Bureau recognized

City officials on May 6 recognized May as Building Safety Month and presented a proclamation to staff from the Community Development Department’s Building Bureau.
Ron Takiguchi, interim superintendent of building in the Community Development Department, told council that the bureau’s staff — including permit technicians, plan check engineers and inspectors — oversee compliance with state and local building codes, accessibility standards and the issuance of thousands of permits each year. He noted active projects including the Alexan West End mixed-use project (an approximately 600-unit project on Broadway adjacent to the World Trade Center), a 163-unit multifamily complex on Long Beach Boulevard, and a Habitat for Humanity project that will provide 36 homes.
A representative from the International Code Council, the ICC government relations regional manager, praised the city’s building-safety work and cited national estimates that modern codes return public benefits (staff cited a FEMA estimate that every $1 invested in modern building codes saves $11). Council presented a certificate to the Building Bureau and invited staff to a group photograph.
