Council approves multiple grants, contracts and personnel agreements in May 6 meeting

The Long Beach City Council on May 6 approved several staff-recommended agreements and grants after brief presentations and limited discussion.

Key items approved by the council included:

- A grant agreement with the California Governor’s Office of Planning and Research / California Volunteers to accept and expend up to $2,670,649 to continue the Long Beach Public Service Corps and related youth workforce programs (Item 25). Staff said the award will provide paid work experiences for up to 152 Long Beach youth and support fellowships, a fire corps and urban planning practica through December 2026.

- Authority to accept and expend $1,427,910 in federal funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for public health infrastructure work (Item 26). Health department staff said the funds support public health capacity; the motion carried after no public comment.

- Execution of an agreement with the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health to accept and expend Mental Health Services Act grant funding up to $1,264,777 for prevention and early-intervention services serving transition-age youth and LGBTQ+ youth at risk of homelessness (Item 27). Health staff tied the proposal to the city’s mental health planning work and said the grant would fund prevention, access-to-treatment activities and supports through June 2026.

- A resolution approving a letter of agreement to the 2023–2026 memorandum of understanding with the Long Beach Management Association (Item 28).

- Execution of an agreement for stop-loss reinsurance coverage with Evolution Risk for an estimated $1,905,592 (Item 29). Human Resources staff presented the item as routine insurance procurement for the city’s self-insured plan.
