Board adopts McGraw Hill Reveal after two-year pilot; $456,639.12 projected 8‑year cost

The Millbrae City School District Board of Trustees voted to adopt the McGraw Hill Reveal elementary mathematics curriculum following a two‑year pilot and site-level review of alternatives.
District staff described a multi-stage adoption process that began with the 2017–18 Eureka adoption, continued through the state’s revised math framework and included an illustrative math pilot and a Reveal pilot during the 2024–25 year. The math pilot committee — composed of teachers from each elementary site — evaluated both programs on engagement, differentiation, multilingual-learner supports and assessment integration.
Spring Valley teacher and pilot presenter Jen Ryan said students and teachers found Reveal more engaging, with more digital tools, manipulatives and lesson structures that prompt mathematical discussion. Ryan summarized classroom feedback: increased engagement, more ready-made practice materials and an assessment structure with frequent “lesson checks” and unit assessments.
Natalie Butrago and other pilot participants reported similar results: students favored Reveal’s “be curious” warm-up prompts and contextual problems; teachers liked the formative assessment options and the ability to assign videos and practice online. Teachers also flagged areas needing attention, especially teacher prep time, pacing for some content, and user interface improvements for the digital platform.
Chief Business Officer Mary Paulette presented the cost estimate: an eight‑year adoption price for McGraw Hill Reveal of $456,639.12; staff said the illustrative option had an estimated cost of approximately $618,000. The recommendation to adopt McGraw Hill cited alignment to the new state math framework, materials that support equity and engagement, and a lower total cost.
Implementation planning includes a three‑hour launch professional development session on Aug. 12, grade‑level breakout time during PD, hybrid follow-up coaching (in-person and Zoom), classroom coaching, and ongoing vendor check-ins. Staff also discussed parent supports: teacher-created short videos or QR-coded lessons so families — including English learners — can follow math methods at home.
At the meeting the board voted to adopt the McGraw Hill Reveal curriculum; the motion carried.
