District pauses Phase 2 of five-year work plan pending rezoning and updated construction prices

Hernando County Schools on May 6 announced a pause on Phase 2 of its five-year work plan while the district completes rezoning analysis and re-evaluates construction costs.
Superintendent Mr. Pender told the board that earlier workshops had given tentative approval for Phase 2 but that subsequent discussion produced consensus to pause. He said the pause is required because the district must review rezoning before proceeding with new school construction or standalone schools and because guaranteed maximum prices (GMPs) returned for Phase 1 projects have come in higher than expected.
‘‘Phase 2 right now is on hold while we look at possible rezoning that’ll come to the board soon at the next workshop,’’ Pender said. He asked the board to confirm consensus to remove Phase 2 from the tentative plan; board members verbally indicated agreement during the meeting.
The discussion was framed as direction to staff rather than a formal board vote; the superintendent asked the board to confirm the hold and several members responded, ‘‘I agree’’ or ‘‘Yes. I agree.’’ No formal action item or roll-call vote appears in the transcript for removing Phase 2; staff said they will bring any revised recommendations back to a future workshop or meeting.
