Eastside Elementary showcases house system and student achievements at May 6 meeting

Eastside Elementary leaders described their school’s house system and leadership-focused culture and highlighted student accomplishments during the Hernando County School Board meeting on May 6.
Mike Lassher, principal of Eastside Elementary, told the board the school is in its third year under current leadership and this year implemented a house system tied to schoolwide expectations. ‘‘We changed our school wide expectations to LEAD, which stands for loyalty, empathy, accountability and determination,’’ Lassher said, adding the school later added ‘‘excellence’’ and ‘‘resilience’’ so the houses collectively spell LEADER.
Assistant Principal Eric Schwartz and Lassher said the house system organizes staff and students into teams that compete on academic measures and foster school culture. Lassher said the school links the house points to short-cycle assessments and that this year’s testing cycle was in its second week when he spoke.
The meeting also included recognition of a student athlete. Roman Cochran, a seventh-grader at Explorer K-8, told the board he ran the 200-meter in 27.9 seconds at the start of the track season and improved to a 25.0-second time by season’s end; he placed third countywide in the 200, fourth in the 100 and fourth in the 4x100 team, according to his remarks.
Student representative Santiago Pinckney provided a districtwide update that listed multiple upcoming elementary and middle school events, graduations and summer programs, and noted open teacher positions at Suncoast Elementary. The student rep and Eastside presenters emphasized leadership development and school celebrations as central to the district’s spring activities.
The board received the presentations during the meeting’s recognition and reports portion; no formal board action was taken on the school’s house system.
