After ballot defeat, Acton approves $150,000 for further design, outreach on public works facility

Town Meeting approved a revised motion to appropriate $150,000 from free cash for design and engineering costs to investigate alternatives for a public works (DPW) facility following the defeat of a larger bond question on the ballot.

Select Board members said the $35 million bond question had failed in a recent ballot vote and that the board wants to keep studying options rather than letting the project lapse. Dean Charter and other select board members described past design work, a prior $1.25 million appropriation for schematic design, and earlier scope reductions of about $8 million. Charter said the building is functionally inadequate and that workers face noise, fume migration and ventilation problems; the Department of Labor had raised concerns about the condition. Supporters argued that a modest appropriation for further study would allow the town to refine scope, explore lower-cost options and perform additional public outreach.

The finance committee opposed the $150,000 article in its present form, saying the ballot outcome indicated a lack of voter support for the project's current scope and that further design money would be premature until the select board and finance committee more fully agreed on the project's parameters. The committee also suggested the town manager could identify funds within the already appropriated FY2026 budget if design work had to be continued.

After a brief interactive poll of the members to gauge ballot opinions and reasons for votes, Town Meeting approved the $150,000 appropriation by majority voice vote.
