Town Meeting approves $1.785 million in capital projects, separates library bathroom and childcare subsidies for discussion
Summary

The primary motion appropriated $1,000,000 from sale proceeds and $785,000 from free cash for a list of capital projects including public safety facility repairs and female locker-room reconfiguration, library upgrades, engineering for roof replacements and town hall accessibility improvements, three hybrid police cruiser replacements, a fire department command vehicle, traffic calming measures, replacement of turnout gear, handheld radio replacements, bathhouse roof design at Narrow Park, limited traffic-signal electronics upgrades at School and Main streets, a pilot low-income sticker subsidy for the transfer/recycling center, and a reduced daycare subsidy program.
During discussion the finance committee asked that the library interior improvements (item A2) not be interpreted as implicit approval of a larger, future library renovation; presenters countered that the library bathroom work addresses immediate ADA and safety needs and would not automatically pre-approve a later larger renovation. Tina Stovall, vice president of the Memorial Library trustees, described accessibility and safety problems in the downstairs restrooms and urged support for the immediate repairs. The finance committee also had concerns about cleaving childcare subsidy (item I) from one-time ARPA funds into an ongoing line; proponents said the request is small and intended to preserve a scaled-back program.
Town Meeting voted first to approve the bundle excluding A2 and I by voice vote, then separately approved A2 (Acton Memorial Library interior improvements) and I (childcare and transfer station subsidy) by voice vote.
