Maury County animal shelter reports high intake, kennel upgrades and ongoing talks with City of Columbia over funding

The Maury County animal shelter reported on Monday that intake and adoptions continue at high levels while facility upgrades and municipal funding talks move forward.
Shelter director Kim Rafael told commissioners the shelter recorded 273 animals entering during the month, that total animal inventory stood at 152 (79 cats and 73 dogs) and that April saw 18 cats and 20 dogs adopted. Volunteers contributed 1,160 hours for the month of April, Rafael said.
Rafael reported facility progress: flooring has been coated, kennel doors are expected to arrive on the 27th of the month, and plumbing and electrical work are finishing. She said kennel sponsorships sold out and a $35,000 sponsorship check was given to the county. A donor from Nashville paid for half the cost of a new dryer after the shelter’s dryer malfunctioned.
Commissioners discussed municipal contributions. Mayor and commissioners said they have discussed a population-share approach — having each municipality pay based on the percentage of county residents in its boundaries — and city officials are expected to present proposals soon. Several commissioners said the historical city–county relationship on animal services deserves examination to confirm whether cost-sharing remains equitable as service demand has grown.
Rafael said she planned to attend the City of Columbia’s upcoming council meeting where the city may address funding. Commissioners asked staff to continue discussions and gather documentation about historical and current cost-sharing arrangements.
No formal budget decision was made at the committee meeting; commissioners asked for continued negotiation and documentation to inform future decisions.
