Carmel-by-the-Sea — During public comment at the May 6 council meeting, residents and community representatives raised local events and policy requests, and staff gave administrative updates.
Will Rye, who identified himself by name, asked the council to reopen applications for the Mills Act historic-property contract because his family faces a property tax reassessment after a death in the family and said the Mills Act would help preserve the house. Mayor Pro Tem Delves and Mayor Dale Byrne said they would discuss the request with planning staff (Chip) at the next planning meeting.
Hella Rothwell, president of the Carmel Gallery Alliance, told the council about the Carmel Art Festival on May 18 at Devendorf Park, describing the day’s activities, an auction and evening gala. Juliet Norman, Carmel High School Associated Student Body President, reported on school events including graduation in one month, AP testing, and spring athletics and arts performances.
Council members announced upcoming public workshops and administrative updates: a community workshop on Local Coastal Program (LCP) amendments and sea-level adaptation funded by a $500,000 grant from the California Coastal Commission is scheduled May 15 (4:00–6:00 p.m.) in council chambers; a Monterey County Vision Zero (road safety) input session led by TAMC (the county transportation agency) is scheduled May 22 (5:30–7:30 p.m.). City Attorney Brian said the library architect contract is still under review by the foundation and its attorney but that fundraising by the Carmel Public Library Foundation is underway. Council members also thanked volunteers for recent Arbor Day events and noted bench dedications.
