Tehachapi council approves communications shelter, event road closures and planning commission recruitment; parks district marks pickleball court anniversary

In a separate presentation the council accepted a certificate recognizing the one-year anniversary of the Tehachapi Police Department pickleball courts and the city’s partnership with the Tehachapi Valley Recreation and Park District (TVRPD).
Engineering and procurement: City engineering staff said the current relay and communications cabinets atop the rock pile are aging and undersized. Engineering reported it solicited vendors, determined masonry was unfeasible at the site and identified a precast solution that will be craned in. Staff said council approval is required because the owner-furnished item exceeds the $70,000 purchasing threshold. The council approved the purchase and vendor approach 5-0; staff described the unit as an 8-by-8 precast shelter sized to house two server racks and allow indoor access for maintenance.
Events and community programs: Parks and Recreation staff and representatives of the Tehachapi Valley Recreation and Park District described a year of successful collaboration at the police pickleball courts, summer tournaments and youth clinics. Mary Anne Pachuelo, chairperson of TVRPD, presented a certificate recognizing the city’s partnership and the courts’ community use.
Staff then summarized the city’s special-events calendar and asked council to approve road closures and hours for major events: weekly Farmers Market (Green Street closures June 5–Aug. 14), Green Street Get Down (Aug. 16), Hometown Christmas (Dec. 6) and the All American Fourth of July celebration (Mohave Street closures). Staff said they reduced some closures after resident and police input to preserve access for affected homes. Council approved the closures 5-0.
Planning commission recruitment: City Clerk presented that three Planning Commission terms expire in June (Steve Hamlin, Daryl Christensen and Kelly Ryan) and recommended council direct staff to advertise for three full-term appointments with terms expiring Jan. 30, 2029. Council voted 5-0 to authorize advertising and return appointment materials in June.
Other consent and housekeeping: The council approved the consent agenda at the start of the meeting by a single motion (5-0). Staff also reminded the public of upcoming community events supported by the city and partners, including Memorial Day activities, farmers market, a bike rodeo, coffee-with-police events and the new small-scale New Year’s Eve event planned at the depot.
