APPC appoints selection panel for temporary Santa Rosa Public Art Walk; $5,000 stipends, 102 submissions

The Art and Public Places Committee appointed committee members Kristen Kiefer and Lisa Fuentes to serve on the selection panel for the Santa Rosa Temporary Public Art Walk, a program to place temporary public artworks in Railroad Square for up to two years. The decision was unanimous.
Meredith Knudson, Arts and Culture staff, described the call for work: “This call was opened, nationally sent to all US based artists, and each artist will be receiving a stipend of $5,000. And that stipend would include, insurance, install, deinstall, travel, etcetera.” Knudson said the program received 102 submissions, mostly from West Coast states but with entries from across the U.S. She said staff and the selection panel will perform virtual scoring (a first round) beginning the following week, then meet in person for final selection in May or June. Staff indicated they hope to bring final selections back to the committee in June and to install works around September, contingent on site approvals and artist availability.
Committee members discussed the project’s goals and logistics: choosing up to 10 artists with several alternates, matching artwork to appropriate downtown sites, scheduling installations around events (including Railroad Square festivals) and ensuring safety for interactive artworks. A public commenter asked what happens to the artwork after two years; Meredith Knudson said the works are artist-owned and will be deinstalled and returned to the artist at the end of the loan period.
The committee moved and unanimously approved the appointment of Kristen Kiefer and Lisa Fuentes to the selection panel. Staff will convene scoring, work with site partners on placement and permits, and return to APPC for final approvals of the selected artworks and contracts.
