Washington County school board awards $2.16M Snow Canyon turf contract, advances budgets and policies; tables Coral Canyon boundary change

The Washington County School District Board of Education on May 8 approved a $2,163,840 low bid from Hughes Construction to replace the track and turf at Snow Canyon High School, moved forward several routine budget and personnel items and program approvals, and tabled a proposed elementary boundary change pending further parent meetings.

The board voted by voice for the Hughes Construction contract after hearing staff say both bids reflected current market conditions and that the project must be completed before the school—s Aug. 17 football game. Craig Hammer, who presented the bid summary, said the construction committee recommended the low bidder and that contractors and subs had committed to the board—s schedule; staff proposed an Aug. 15 completion target. Hammer said the district has a contingency plan to host the first home game elsewhere if needed.

Board members also considered the district—s proposed budgets for fiscal 2018-19. Brent Bills presented the proposed maintenance-and-operations budget and a multi-fund overview: roughly 48.5% of revenue is projected from state sources, about 37% from property taxes and 8.5% from federal sources.
