Sheriff’s office to buy $84,277 sonar system; local nonprofit gives $40,000 toward replacement

Kootenai County commissioners on May 6 approved replacing a failed sonar system used by the sheriff’s sonar team at a purchase price of $84,277.23.
Sergeant Ryan Miller told the board the existing system (purchased in February 2006) had become functionally obsolete, was no longer supported by the manufacturer and could not be repaired; staff solicited three bids and two did not meet specifications. The recommended supplier was Marine Sonic / Atlas North America. The Mahogany Boaters Education Association, a local 501(c)(3), agreed to contribute $40,000 toward the purchase.
Sheriff’s staff proposed splitting the remaining balance roughly in half: $22,001.38 charged to the KCSO vessel account and $22,138.61 to come from the county’s Justice Fund contingency. The board approved the purchase and funding split; because the expenditure was unexpected, commissioners discussed using contingency funds. The board approved the motion and the purchase will proceed.
Staff said they will return with any required equipment disposition or operational follow-up as needed.
