Kootenai County commissioners approved the county’s FY26 Public Transportation program of projects and authorized submission to the Kootenai Metropolitan Planning Organization (KMPO). The program totals $4,635,758 over five years, including $2,844,500 in federal assistance and $1,791,258 in local match, and covers operations, preventative maintenance, planning and training for fixed-route and ADA paratransit services, plus rolling stock and capital expenses for the Coeur d'Alene urbanized area.
Chad Engel of the Transit Department told the board that the program was previously approved by the Board on March 25 for publication and that no public comments were received during the public hearing. He emphasized the submission does not obligate the county to funding; each grant would still require separate board approval.
During deliberations a commissioner noted a desire for closer liaison-level discussions on future items and said city representatives had expressed openness to exploring more options. Commissioner Eberlein recorded a Nay on the final motion; Commissioner Duncan and the chair voted Aye and the motion carried.
The board instructed staff to proceed with the KMPO submission; individual grant awards would return to the board for formal approval if and when those applications are successful.
