Kootenai County commissioners on May 6 approved a one-time allocation of opioid settlement funds — $24,085.72 — to bring DARE instructor training to the county for school resource officers (SROs).
Andrea Littlefield of the Office of Emergency Management explained the training would be hosted in Kootenai County and that SROs from the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office and invited city agencies would be asked to attend; the per-session cost is the same regardless of the number of attendees. Littlefield said the request fits into Appendix A of the opioid settlement framework under four categories; a county finance staff member, Jolina Hill, reported the county opioid account had “just a little over a million dollars” available that had not been allocated.
Commissioner Duncan moved to approve the request; the motion was seconded and carried unanimously. Commissioners recorded no cuts to other programs to fund the training, per Littlefield’s response to a board question.
