Woodard referenced North Carolina General Statute 20-187.2 when presenting the request to the board. The board moved, seconded and approved the request by voice vote.
Woodard then asked for the board's approval to retire K-9 Tank to his handler, Sergeant Sierra Pollard. The sheriff described Tank's role in explosive and article searches, school safety demonstrations and community outreach and said Tank has been with the office for about 10 years but has a diagnosis of lymphoma and should retire to live with his handler. Woodard asked the board for prayers and approval; the board approved the retirement motion by voice vote.
Commissioners offered brief thanks for service and applauded the department's work; the actions were recorded on the meeting record and carried by voice vote with no opposition recorded on the transcript.
