Commissioners decline tourism committee nominee after contested public discussion

Scotts Bluff County commissioners voted 4–1 to deny the tourism committee’s recommendation to appoint Lisa Betts Marquez to the county tourism advisory board, sparking a lengthy public discussion and multiple citizen appeals.

Brenda, a tourism committee representative, told the board the interview panel recommended Betts Marquez after an hour of interviews and discussion; she outlined Betts Marquez’s hospitality background as owner of Peaceful Prairie Campsites and cited community volunteer work. An initial motion to approve the recommendation was made but failed for lack of a second. A later motion to deny the appointment was moved and seconded; after public comment and discussion the board voted 4–1 in favor of the denial.

Public commenters urged the board to accept the committee’s recommendation. Multiple residents said the tourism committee’s selection process should be respected and warned the decision could discourage volunteers.
