Votes at a glance: Petersburg Borough assembly advances budget, adopts two ordinances and approves leases and permits

PETERSBURG, Alaska — The Petersburg Borough Assembly took several formal actions during its May 5 regular meeting, including final adoption of two ordinances, first reading of the FY2026 budget ordinance and approval to move several items through permitting and review.

Ordinances adopted (third and final reading)

- Ordinance 2025-03: Adjust fiscal year 2025 budget for known changes. The ordinance passed unanimously on its third and final reading. The clerk called the roll and all voting members recorded affirmative votes; the ordinance carried.

- Ordinance 2025-04: Amend Chapter 19 (Zoning) to establish overlay zones and create a marine industrial overlay zone. The ordinance passed unanimously on its third and final reading following staff work and prior readings.

Budget and other measures

- Ordinance 2025-05: FY2026 budget ordinance. The assembly approved first reading of the FY2026 budget ordinance unanimously; the ordinance will return for two more readings and the second reading will include a public hearing.

- Resolution 2025-09: Adopt updated records-retention and disposition schedule. The assembly adopted an updated local government records-retention schedule (which mirrors State of Alaska Schedule 300.1) by unanimous vote.

Permits, leases and other approvals

- American Cruise Lines lease application: The assembly voted to forward American Cruise Lines’ lease application for a borough-owned parcel near the harbor to the Planning and Zoning Commission and Harbor Board for their required public hearings and review. The motion to move the application forward passed unanimously. The lease application will return to the assembly after those reviews.

- Petersburg Volunteer Fire Department Association sign: The assembly approved the volunteer association’s request to install a lighted sign, to be paid for by the association, subject to permitting and right-of-way rules. The motion passed unanimously.

Executive session and next steps

The assembly recessed into an executive session to discuss labor negotiations with the borough’s bargaining team and the IBEW; the motion to recess for the executive session passed by roll call.
