Veterans service officer resigns; Walsh County to review VSO role before replacement

Walsh County Veterans Service Officer (VSO) David Vaughn submitted his resignation, effective at the end of May, county administrator Tanya told commissioners May 6. Tanya asked the board to allow time for staff to review the VSO position and how it has been structured before seeking a replacement.
Tanya said the VSO position has changed in recent years and that neighboring counties’ VSOs maintain good relationships and can provide interim services if needed. She asked commissioners to “take a breather” on the vacancy so staff could explore whether a part‑time, full‑time or restructured position would best serve veterans’ needs.
Commissioner Paul, as portfolio holder for that office, said he had met with David and Tanya and was comfortable with Tanya’s plan to evaluate the role before advertising. Commissioners expressed regret at David’s resignation and expressed appreciation for his work; they agreed to wait for Tanya’s recommendations rather than immediately advertising a vacancy.
