Walsh County commissioners adopt countywide burn ban amid dry conditions

Walsh County commissioners voted on May 6 to adopt a countywide burn ban after fire chiefs reported dry conditions and recent grass and brush fires in parts of the county.

The proclamation was described by county staff as a response to recent incidents and current weather forecasts. Commissioners said the ban is written to remain in effect through Nov. 1, 2025, unless local fire departments recommend lifting it earlier.

Commissioner discussion and staff remarks emphasized that the ban grew from requests by local fire chiefs who had identified particularly dry areas that did not receive recent rains. County staff told commissioners there have been four fires since the proclamation went into effect: one near Grafton off Highway 17 toward Stark River, one outside Edinburg and two other recent fires.

Commissioner action came after a motion that the county sign and implement the proclamation; the motion passed unanimously. County officials said all fire departments within Walsh County were consulted before adoption.

County staff said the ban’s main goal is to reduce ignition risk while high heat and wind continue. Commissioners and staff encouraged residents to check with local fire departments for details and to follow any additional local restrictions.

The proclamation’s effective date was presented as immediately upon signature, with an effective end date written as Nov. 1, 2025, subject to earlier rescission by the fire chiefs if conditions improve.
