Waterfront committee schedules 30th annual coastal cleanup for May 18; over 100 preregistered

Mike Drew Lever, representing the Waterfront Environmental Committee, told council the committee's 30th annual coastal cleanup is set for May 18, beginning at 8 a.m. at the Jefferson Yacht Club. Lever said more than 100 people had preregistered and that volunteers would be assigned to target areas including Veterans Beach, Blossom Heath, the pier and other shorelines.
Lever said volunteers will be provided registration, food and lunch at Jefferson Yacht Club and that sponsors would cover food and drink. The committee is focusing on increasing student and homeowners association participation after a decline following 2020. Lever said the marina is pursuing a "clean marina" certification and that Trader Todd's Marina is participating. He also described a Storm Drain Medallion project to replace temporary stenciling with more durable aluminum markers.
Staff noted Macomb County public works will have a representative at the cleanup. Registration details are on Facebook and Eventbrite. Lever invited council and residents to attend.
Ending: Organizers expect a large volunteer turnout and asked groups to preregister online; the Storm Drain Medallion project is intended to be a longer-term, lower-maintenance approach than prior stenciling efforts.
