Salem resident tells Marion County commissioners loud band rattled neighborhood and disrupted family with dementia
Summary
At the Board of Commissioners weekly session, a Salem resident said a neighbor's band played so loudly it shook his house, kept children and animals awake and aggravated a spouse with dementia; he said calls to the Marion County Sheriff's Office were told to wait until the 10 p.m. noise cutoff.

Matt Zaleski, a Salem resident, told the Marion County Board of Commissioners on May 7 that a neighbor's outdoor band played loudly from about 5:15 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and that "the music was so loud that it shook my front window." Zaleski said the noise alarmed his dogs, prevented a neighbor from sleeping after the recent death of his wife and kept a nearby preschooler from being put to bed.
The board meeting's public comment segment drew Zaleski to ask for sheriff's office assistance. "I called the Marion County sheriff and they told me 10:00. 10:00," he said, describing deputies' guidance to wait for the county's noise cutoff. Chair and other commissioners indicated a county sheriff's representative was in the room and that someone from the sheriff's office would follow up before Zaleski left.
Zaleski said multiple households in his cul-de-sac and neighbors as far away as Haysville heard the music and that the loud speakers "rattling my house" created a neighborhood disturbance. He told commissioners that a Polk County deputy who drove through the area could hear the noise at a distance.
The board did not take formal action during the public comment period. Commissioners and staff indicated the sheriff's office would speak with Zaleski following the meeting, and the sheriff and enforcement staff were present in the room during the session.
The exchange occurred during the meeting's public comment item; no ordinance, citation number or formal follow-up order was recorded in the meeting minutes during that item.
