Economic support reports SNAP changes after COVID unwinding; childcare certification remains a challenge

Shauna White, economic support staff, summarized March program data and said the county’s recent food-stamp management evaluation review with the Department of Health Services “went really well.” She said customer-service feedback from benefit recipients exceeded the state average, despite lingering problems related to COVID-era program unwinding and new work-search requirements for certain adults.
White explained that during the COVID period many households received the maximum SNAP allotment and that when pandemic-era policies ended, eligibility and benefit amounts returned to income-based calculations. “So some households did receive fewer benefits,” she said, and noted that able-bodied adults without dependents may now be subject to time-limited benefits and work-search requirements.
On childcare certification, staff said Northwest Family Connection Resource Center presented county data and the department is reviewing it with DCF; the committee heard that provider recruitment remains a challenge. A county staffer noted a regional Department of Children and Families office moved from Chicago to Kansas City, prompting uncertainty about how regional roles and support for providers will be maintained.
Committee members did not take formal votes on economic-support policy or childcare certification at the meeting; staff said they will continue to monitor program changes and coordinate with regional partners.
