HHS hires truancy worker, plans summer outreach and collaboration with LCO and Sirona Recovery

Children, Youth and Family Services said it will add a truancy worker starting June 1, will continue work with Sirona Recovery on diversion services and will partner with LCO on youth engagement campaigns.
Sarah Anchelskis, Children, Youth and Family Supervisor, reported that the department has hired a truancy worker, Melinda Ollos, who will start the position June 1 and is currently a paraeducator in special education at Hayward Middle School. "She is the para in special ed there and, I've worked with her through working with some of our more difficult youth and she does a fantastic job of connecting with them and building relationships," Anchelskis said.
Anchelskis said the department had used Sirona Recovery, a contracted diversion program, to keep recently referred truant students connected to school this year and said the plan is to build relationships over the summer to strengthen supports ahead of the next school year. She also described collaboration with Ben Tran from LCO to run a youth engagement campaign across Sawyer County schools, including Hayward and Winter, aimed at promoting education and reenergizing school staff.
No formal motions or budget allocations for the hire or collaborations were recorded in the meeting. The department said it will continue to work with school partners and community stakeholders to implement truancy interventions and prevention work.
