Miller’s Landing project to add three accessible watercraft launches; park access to open in June

The Park District reported May 20 that construction is wrapping up on the Miller’s Landing river access and habitat restoration project and that the site will open in June.
Ian Isaacson, a member of the committee who presented photos and design details, said construction will total about $1,200,000 and that the project is fully funded by grants and a private donation. "Projects like these are extremely complicated anytime you work in the river," Isaacson said, adding that adding accessible components increases complexity and cost.
The project includes two downstream access points and a main access with three watercraft launches designed for different needs: an "0-entry" launch with a transfer bench that reaches water level; a gentle-sloped launch for assisted entry to watercraft; and a roller launch with a shaded transfer bench to accommodate changing river elevations. Isaacson said the roller launch and shade veil will allow transfers regardless of seasonal fluctuations in river level.
The project also includes grouted boulder terraces, handrails and bank stabilization to protect riparian habitat. Isaacson said habitat uplift was a key project component: a formerly undercut ponderosa was protected by bank work and native plantings, and fencing was installed to protect restored riparian zones.
On-site parking includes an off-street lot with one existing ADA space; staff will stripe a second ADA space for opening and will monitor demand during the first summer season.
Ending: The Park District said Miller’s Landing will open in June and invited the committee and community groups to visit once the site is open. Committee members praised the project and discussed the potential for a future committee "walk, roll, paddle" visit.
