Courtney, a community member and committee lead who has been coordinating fundraising and bids, described the top-of-hill Little League location as the plan’s only feasible site given the work already completed and the grant conditions tied to the larger package. She said the combined plan (fields, restrooms, playground and pavilion) unlocks roughly $350,000 in outside funding that the town could lose if it selects a smaller site.
Committee members and councilors discussed water-pressure concerns, a power pole that may not need immediate relocation and the feasibility of adding tiered and hillside parking. One council member expressed concern that a 35-space parking plan could be insufficient when tournaments are held; others pointed out additional town-owned land and private options near the site that could supply more spaces.
On the American Legion Hall, the council debated options to relocate the group or preserve parts of the building. The council adopted a motion to demolish the Legion Hall with the caveat that the town will provide at least six weeks’ notice and help arrange interim meeting space for the Legion membership; the motion passed 4-1.
Council also approved an excavation bid from Lamb Excavating for $206,000 to perform grading, drainage and parking work at the Little League site, conditioned on receiving the written bid for the record; that motion passed 5-0.
Council members said substantial preparatory work can occur before the Legion Hall is removed, including starting the parking and restroom segments so the town can accept grant funds and meet grant timelines. Committee members reported the county has committed $150,000 and other boards have signaled further support if progress is shown.
Next steps include placing the written excavation bid in the town record, coordinating removal or preservation of Legion Hall components with the post membership and continuing conversations about additional parking locations and fundraising.
