Lansdale Parks & Recreation committee reported May 7 that several projects are advancing this spring and that staff will research electric-bike rules for park trails after residents raised safety concerns.
Councilwoman Rachel Bollins (reporting) said the West Fifth Street playground plans are posted online and will go out to bid on May 19; the project includes fence replacement along the rail line and shade structures over benches. Bollins said the project appears slightly under budget given matching grants, and if bids come in as expected, the borough's out-of-pocket cost may be minimal.
Renovations at White's Road Pool were described as on time: plaster work is expected within two weeks, and supply-chain delays may push shade sails and slides to early June. Both pools (White's Road and Fourth Street) are on schedule to open for the summer on Memorial Day, and the committee reported 1,755 current memberships across pool programs.
The restroom project at White's Road has a contractor notice to proceed with a 75-day contract window; the contractor expects to finish earlier if possible. Parks staff said new locker-room doors have been installed at White's Road and other maintenance work (mulch, plantings) is complete.
Committee members also discussed reports of electric-assist bicycles and higher-speed e-bikes on multiuse park trails and in Stony Creek. Councilman BJ Bryce and Parks staff said the borough will research other jurisdictions' approaches and state classifications for e-bikes, and Parks will bring findings back to committee. Park staff emphasized they want to balance safety for children and trail users with accessibility for residents who rely on assisted devices.
Parks staff noted outreach and events for the season, including a Kids to Parks Day event on May 17 with family activities and partners, and said staff are planning night-swim events, dive-in movies and other programming.
