Finance committee forwards most department budgets; police budget passes after split vote

The Cambridge City Finance Committee advanced the majority of the city departmental budgets to the full City Council during its May 8 meeting, forwarding the Cambridge Health Alliance allocation, public works, inspections, housing, community development and other major items with favorable committee recommendations. The Police Department budget also advanced to the full council but drew a split roll-call vote.

The committee’s work was largely procedural: department staff gave brief presentations and answered councilors’ questions on staffing, program changes and capital priorities. Most departmental budgets moved with unanimous or near-unanimous committee support. The Police Department’s FY26 appropriation passed the committee with a 5–3 roll-call result after elected members debated the department’s new co-response arrangements with behavioral-health clinicians and the overlap with the fledgling Community Safety Department.

Why it matters: These committee recommendations are advisory to the full City Council. Approvals at the committee level streamline the final budget process, but the City Council makes the final appropriations.
