Advisory group renames itself 'Parks and Community Enrichment Committee'

The Parks and Greenway Advisory Committee voted May 14 to rename itself the Parks and Community Enrichment Committee.

Members said the new name better reflects the group's wider focus on parks, open space, sustainability and community programs rather than limiting the committee to park facilities alone.

Committee members discussed several candidate names on May 14 and compared the tradeoffs between clarity and scope. Coral (chairperson) and others said including the word “parks” helps residents immediately understand the group’s focus, while words such as “enrichment” or “sustainability” broaden the committee’s remit. After suggestions and a show of hands, members agreed on Parks and Community Enrichment Committee and adopted the change by a voice vote.

Members said the title is intended to be more accessible for the general public while leaving room to consider topics such as art, stormwater, sustainability and open space. Committee members also discussed whether to include the word “advisory” in the formal title and agreed the term “committee” would still make the group’s advisory role clear in their governance materials.

The committee will record the formal name change in its minutes and update outreach materials. The vote was taken during the meeting’s ongoing-business agenda item and followed a brief period of brainstorming and review of suggested names.
